U.S. BASKETBALL UNIVERSITY COACHES & STAFF:

Athletic Director / Director of Coaching:

Gerardo Cruz

Cruz graduated from the University of Southern California after playing at Sierra College. He played professionally overseas in Spain for two seasons before returning to Los Angeles and graduating from Pepperdine University with his Master’s degree. He has been coaching Youth and Travel basketball for over 15 years.

He entered into real estate development in 1996 and is currently Senior Vice President of Finance and Investor Relations for All American Homes and Estates. In 1998 he married his college sweetheart then settled in Stevenson Ranch in 1999 where they live with their 14 year old son Gerardo Maxmilion and their 6 year old daughter Presley Ryan.

Gerardo's love of the game has been a constant in his life as has been passing along the lessons and joys of playing basketball to younger generations.

 


Medical Coordinator:

Dr. Joshua Mitchell

Dr. Joshua Mitchell has been serving the Santa Clarita Valley in the medical field for over seven years. He attended Purdue University in Indiana, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Southern California University of Health Sciences, earning his Chiropractic Doctorate. He played high school basketball and soccer, as well as Division II college soccer.

Dr. Mitchell specializes in Sports Medicine. He is the team doctor for several of the local high school athletic programs as well as the Master's College. He enjoys playing basketball and golf and going snowboarding and mountain biking. Because of this active lifestyle he has experienced athletic injuries and knows what it feels like to be "sidelined." The focus of his practice is on minimizing these types of injuries and getting the athlete back into competition as quickly as possible.

Dr. Mitchell consults with patients about their nutritional needs and provides all natural, whole food supplements for optimal bioavailability, including clinical detoxification and weight management. He is skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of auto related injuries. He performs gentle and safe chiropractic techniques, including maternity and pediatric chiropractic care, as well as postoperative rehabilitation. He and his friendly staff are committed to helping individuals and families reach optimal spinal and physical health through chiropractic care and sports medicine. Dr. Mitchell has experience working on children of all ages.

Dr. Mitchell is currently the Medical Coordinator for US Basketball University. He will be attending practices and games throughout the season. If you have questions in regards to pain or sports related injuries, please feel free to ask questions on site or call his office. If an injury arises during the course of play, Dr. Mitchell will offer a special discount to all members of the US Basketball University family.

Director of Officials:

Mike Nugent

Mike is a pillar of the officiating community in Southern California. He has been a Junior College official since 1992 and has officiated over 30 Junior College playoff games. He has been a High School official since 1980 and currently is on the CIF Board of Directors for officials and is the Co-Instructional Committee Chairman. He also has 25 years experience as a coach at the high school level.

We are fortunate to have Mike leading our team of officials which are comprised only of local referees with High School and/or Junior College playoff experience. The result is that we have only the best of the best officials refereeing our games at the U.S. Basketball University.

As outstanding an official as Mike is recognized to be, he is an even better person as evidenced by his continued work for the past 17 years with students at the William S. Hurt Union High School District. He lives locally with his wife of 35 years.

His passion for the game of basketball is tough to beat and he continues to enjoy assisting the youth of the SCV learn and enjoy the game.

 


Director of Basketball Operations:

Nana Gbewonyo

Coach Nana played at Washburn University and Henderson State. He was selected a second Team All-Conference selection while pursuing a degree in sociology. After college Nana had the opportunity to play professional but chose to go into acting and has had roles in such hit films as Coach Carter, Grand Torino and the 2013 hit The Possession. He has been coaching Youth and Travel basketball for over 10 years.

 


 

Head Coach:

Ella Joines

Coach Joines played for the English national team and qualifies to play in the 2012 London Olympics for her country. She played collegiately at Masters College and has coached Youth and Travel Basketball teams for nearly 10 years.

 


 

Head Coach:

Rodney Taylor

Coach Taylor played collegiately at Oklahoma State University and has coached Youth and Travel basketball for over 15 years.

 


 

Head Coach:

Tiffany Seston

Tiffany played DI NCAA basketball at Wright State University before transferring to Master's College. While at WSU (2001-2003), she set school records for most points in a game, 49, and 1000+ pts in 2 years. She was also named first team All-League.

While at Master's College (2003-2005), she was named NAIA DI All-American. She set school records for most points in a game, 46 and most three-pointers in a game, 9. She was also named First team All-League and Master's College Female Athlete of the year.

Tiffany coached JV high school basketball at Bellbrook High School in Ohio and was an assistant coach at Master's College in 2007. In 2007 she received her Masters degree from the University of Dayton.

She is currently a 6th grade teacher at Legacy Academy as well as the Head Coach for the Boy's team. She lives in Santa Clarita with her husband and is passionate about making a difference in the lives of children.

 


Head Coach:

Kent Dennis

Coach Kent played in collegiately at Loyola Marymount and is entering his 12th Season with the U.S. Basketball University. He has been coaching Youth and Travel basketball for over 10 years.

 


 

Head Coach:

Tommy Mitchell

Coach Mitchell starred collegiately at Sienna College. After graduating he played professionally in Europe and most recently with the Golden State Warriors of the NBA in 2011/2012. He has over 10 years of experience coaching Youth and Travel basketball.

 


 

Head Coach:

Theresa Brown

Coach Brown was selected as a McDonald’s All-American. The highest honor for a high school player. She played collegiately at Masters College. She has nearly 10 years of experience coaching Youth and Travel basketball.

 


 

Head Coach:

Dean Hadley

Coach Hadley played collegiately at the University of San Francisco and The Masters College. He is currently playing professionally in France and coaches at U.S. Basketball University when he is in Los Angeles in the off season. He has been coaching Youth and Travel basketball for over 5 years.

 


 

Head Coach:

Nic Campbell

Coach Campbell starred collegiately at the University of California Irvine. After graduating he played professionally in Australia. He has coached Youth and Travel Basketball teams for over 10 years.

 


 

Head Coach:

Chad Allen

Coach Allen played collegiately at Cameron University in Oklahoma and has coached Youth and Travel Basketball teams for over 10 years. He is entering his 9th Season with the U.S. Basketball University.

 


 

Head Coach:

Myron Watkins

Coach Watkins played collegiately at the University of California Riverside and has coached Youth and Travel Basketball teams for over 25 years.

 


 

Head Coach:

Raphael Harris

Coach Harris played collegiately at The Masters University and has been playing professionally in Mongolia. He has coached Youth and Travel Basketball teams for over 5 years. He is entering his 4th Season with the U.S. Basketball University.

 


 

Head Coach:

Joey Fuca

Coach Fuca played collegiately at The Master's College. Since graduating, he has been playing professionally in Germany. He has nearly 10 years of experience coaching Youth and Travel basketball.

 


 

Assistant Coach:

Kaylynn Martin

Coach Martin played collegiately at the Masters College and will be graduating in the Spring of 2014. She is entering her 3rd Season with U.S. Basketball University.

 


 

Assistant Coach:

Derick Fain

Coach Fain is playing collegiately at the Masters College and has coached Youth and Travel Basketball teams for 3 years.

 


 

Assistant Coach:

Ryan Watkins

Coach Watkins is currently starring collegiately at Boise State University and has coached Youth and Travel Basketball teams for nearly 5 years.

 


 

Assistant Coach:

Rendon Dominguez

Rendon played varsity basketball on both coasts at Chapin High School in Chapin, SC and at Hart High School in Newhall, CA. He graduated from Hart in 2008, and redshirted his freshman season at Master's College.

He is currently playing for College of the Canyons. He is a business major, and would love to coach full-time after he graduates and is done playing.

Rendon has 2 young brothers whom he has spent time coaching and has worked multiple basketball camps as well as refereed youth sports for a number of years. He has a real love of children and a passion to help them improve s basketball players.

 


Assistant Coach:

Drew Menez

Drew led Clayton Valley High School in scoring at a junior and senior. He received a scholarship to UC Davis and later transferred to Santa Rosa Junior College where he played for one year. Coach Menez now plays for The Master's College.
